Everyone in my neighborhood has a turkey mound.(huge lump in the front or back of house.) I don't have that. I was told that I had a cesspool and it was underground which is better.

A cesspool is an above ground way of eliminating waste from a house. The sewer lie runs driectly to it, and waste is broken down over time and interaction with the open air.
A septic tank is an underground holding tank that also breaks down some of the silid waste, then allows discharge into usually and underground drainage field.
Trust me, you would know if you had a cesspool, and it would be above ground.

A cesspool is basically a holding tank, leaky or not.

A septic tank breaks down the "effluent" and sends it out through the field lines to be absorbed.

Out septic tank has been going 25+ years without pumping it out because we don't run soaps into it, except for the little that comes from showers and we add "rid-x" every so often to help replentish the bacteria.

Your home sewage comes out of the home through a 4" line into a ceptic tank. Through the eating of the waste caused by bacteria the waste is broken down and leaves the septic tank through another line that goes to an area that this line breaks off into several branches in. These lines are all buried in trenches that have been filled with stone that allow the lines to drain. In some parts of the country this is called a leach field. Others call it a cess pool. When the water or foul smelling water perculates to the surface you have a cess pool, lol

septic tank should be pumped ou at least every 5 years to keep field distribution lines clear or they plug up & have to be replaced $$$$. ure lucky if u have cesspool cause its just a hole in ground & if it dont stink, youre golden until whatever makes the hole in the ground deteriorates on top & caves in, hpefully its not too thin metal.. rid-x or any septic treatment is good for cesspool BUT NOT SEPTIC TANK especially if u dump washer etc. down drain. avoid garbage disposers by all means, they plug up everything eventually. X is granular bacteria which dissolve septic solids=great for cesspool BUT NOT SEPTIC TANK. if u use x on septic tank, the dissolved solids will flow out to field lines & plug them!
cess pools are out of code but noone cares or knows about them unless they stink.
i'd make sure i didnt have septic tank cause it'd be wise to pump it.pronto! maybe u can rent underground detector from local rental & figure out what u have. someone in your hood might know....god luck.

Septic tank is code in many counties. Better.

A cesspool is just a hole in the ground with sewage piped into it.
Passe!
They eventually become full, not usually pumped out like the old days.

A tank can and will be pumped out if necessary.

Usually Septic systems are under ground and sealed, they need to be drained occasionally by professionals and cesspools are above ground and have an access, but drain off naturally, like your neighbors have. I think someone got it backwards.
