As a travelled American and been over the pond several times here is my take. It seems to me that American's prefer the sports with lots of strategies as opposed to the really simple ones.
The popular sports across the pond are soccer, rugby, golf, and cricket. For the most part they are simple games without too many strategies involved in the game. But when you look at American sports it's all about matchups and strategies.
In baseball they want a left handed pitcher to go up against a left handed batter, they have different defensive positions (double play depth, shifts, guarding the lines, etc), they have hit and runs, stealing bases, and several things you can do with the personel you have.
In the NBA it's all about matchups and how a team takes advantage of that matchup. For example, Steve Nash will run the pick and roll on a defense untill he gets a mismatch that will ruin a defense. Or putting Dirk Nowitzki on the upper block where it's dangerous to send a double-team and Dirk is good enough to destroy any defender one-on-one.
And in football there are SOOOOOOOO many intricities envolved that it's almost as complicated as a chess game. And I believe that's why it's the #1 sport in America. It's like a real life chess game with the pieces trying to literally take each other out.
So when we see a game like soccer there's not much to think about. It's basically...look at this guy kick the ball to this other guy, oh and now it's going the other way, ohh and look at this guy fall down when he wasn't even touched. The only strategy that comes into a 90+ minute game of soccer is the set pieces.
I'm not saying one is better than the other. I'm just saying that different people have different preferences.

no, it goes on for faaaar too long, its silly that you change your players depending on whether you are attacking or defending...
its just boring, and the atmosphere is fake, made by your cheerleaders and singers
