I suppose I have a problem with the question - "take over from us"? Take over as what, exactly? I'll grant that we're probably the most intelligent species on the planet. Is that what you're after? If so, the answer would probably have to be chimpanzee or dolphin.
Are we talking about biomass? If so, then mankind doesn't even crack the top 10. Start with the Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) which has a biomass about double that of humans. Does that make them more successful than us? Beats me.
Are we talking about the ability of a species to modify the planet? Well, that's hard to quantify, but I suppose that our ability to vaporize the surface of the planet is pretty good, until you take into account what blue-green algae have done over the past few billion years in creating an atmosphere for the planet.
Are we talking about position in the food chain? Well, then the great white shark is probably higher up than us.
As for the other responders who answered "insects", "roaches", or "ants", it should probably be pointed out that none of those are species. Insects are actually a "class" (Insecta), which includes close to a million known species. As for roaches, they are an "order" (Blattodea), and include about 3500 known species. Ants are a "family" (Formicidae), and have over 11,000 species.

Humanity can not stay longer than the universe without by some ability leaving it. it quite is surprisingly doubtful there is any skill thank you to try this, or, if there is, that we are able to be around long adequate to parent it out. meanwhile, evolution procedes apace and in a blink of an eye fixed on a prevalent time scale our descendents will now not be human yet something else, counting on what situations they face as existence is going on. We blend adequate to stay a single species now, yet as quickly as we ever do start up colonizing different planets we are going to in all probability see speciation by using that isolation. Species and evolutionary strains have fallen by using the wayside infinite cases, nevertheless, and it quite is in all probability our line will eventially be certainly one of them. some descendents of earth existence might ok make certain the issue of surviving the warmth death, yet odds are it quite is not us. we are going to take a shot at it, nevertheless.

If it is a sudden failure of human existence the any one of a hundred species could become top dog.
However, more likely are much stranger things. Men will disappear first as women do not need them (just a bottle in a fridge). I suspect that humanity will fade away and machines will become the next thing to take over.

I find the notion of 'taking over' peculiar. What would they be taking over? Our dominance, our posession of the Earth? I think those things are human centric illusions. The bugs already out number us. Does the fact that we draw maps claiming portions of the Earth mean anything really?
We only think we're the center of creation. It's a big part of what's wrong with us as a species.

1st) Insects of many varieties, the hardiest ones (Bettels form the Sahara desert) will last the longest, but eventually it will be down to bacteria (extremophiles) and finally Viruses, further donw it can not be considered alive (neither are viruses in the sense of the word).. it will be aminoiacid chains... at the end of the day nothing organic will survive, only inorganic matter...

Plain and simple hun...roaches. No matter how many times you kill them, they keep comin' back. I suspect that even if there was a nuclear war, they'd still be there...
