I think there are 18 groups.

There are 18 groups starting from the right: alkali metals (group 1), alkaline earth metals (group 2), transition metals (groups 3-12), the boron group (13), the carbon group (14), the nitrogen group (15), the oxygen group (which I think is called the chalcogen group) (16), the halogens (17), and the noble gases (18).
