The Mayan were able to figure out that the morning and afternoon star were the same and had a good deal of knowledge from generations of observation.
They did have a form of astrology that was also based on 12 signs of the Zodiac. It is a basic human awareness of the fundamental order of existence and the sky best represents that order.
But remember, while they did also have the zero they only had whole numbers: no fractions or decimals.

Legend and history have it that the Mayans had an advanced civilization and it is true they were great astronomers. I believe they were astrologers as well, but their system was a little different than the one currently in use.

The Mayans were indeed experts on the stars. As to the distinction between astronomers and astrologers, it didn't exist among the ancients. The modern practice of astronomy grew out of the astrology of the ancient world (which was used largely for tracking the seasons for planting and harvesting). The use of astrology as a tool solely of divination is more modern than ancient.

You know I was watching something on the Mayans on the History Channel last night..maybe you could go to their website and find out...From the 4 books that were spared from the mass burning from the spanish preist..they had some pretty accurate predictions about the world...and the calender.
