Swing shift usually refers to the fact that you will be working several different shifts over a given period of time. Where I work the guys working swing would work 2 3rd shifts 11pm-7am on their first 2 days of the week then 1st shift 7am-3pm on the 3rd day of the week . Then work 2 second shifts 3pm-11pm on the 4th and 5th days of their week. I worked it for a while and it was hell. I was always tired and never knew which day it was. There are guys who have worked it for a long time and really like it. You work with different people throughout the week and you have a variety in your time off.

swing shift is a shift that covers the end of one shift and the Beginning of another shift. A typical 8 hour continuous cover plan works like this 1st shift 8-4 ,2nd shift 4-12, 3rd shift 12-8... so a swing shift might be noon to 8pm, so you work half of one shift and half of another.

You work from 6:00am to 6:00pm for a given time of a week or two weeks, and you switch to 6:00pm to 6:00am for the same amount of time. You swing from day shift to night shift every so often, thus meaning swing shift.

Usually 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sometimes starts an hour later and finishes an hour later. It's the shift between the day shift and the night shift. Sometimes it overlaps one or the other by starting before the previous one ends, or ending after the next one starts.

A full shift after the primary (day) shift has left. Usually 1500-2300, 1600-2400, 1700-0100, etc. Quite common in health care, law enforcement, retailing, manufacturing, etc.

Followed by graveyard shift which covers midnight til morning.
