I know we're supposed to say that it doesn't matter and all of that, but I have had something similar happen to me and it really hurt my feelings. However, I just had to come to realize (eventually) that some people are just not good at that sort of thing, and it doesn't mean that he loves you any less. Make sure that he knows how you feel about it though, because otherwise it will just keep eating at you.

I wouldn't read much into it, apart from the fact that he's bad at remembering birthdays. My mother always gave my father hints to remind him, personally I have my calendar at work set to prompt me a week before my wife's birthday.

Many men (and some women) are not good at remembering important dates. For example, i can tell you that my best friend since high school, who was the best man in my wedding, he has his birthday some time in late spring or early summer. I have no idea what season any of my other friends have their birthday in.

If he's in other ways a good husband, don't read anything into it, but let him know that he should find a system so that he doesn't forget again.

Well be thankful there's still a crappy present given to you but do tell him in a nice way that you do expect more from him. ^_^
