Im from northern Ontario Canada and we have black flies comparable to fruit flies in size that bite in swarms sometimes they just annoy you when they swarm around your face but wont bite and other times they just go on a feeding frenzy, most times they leave an itchy red bump but can draw blood , deer flies and horse flies both bite hard and draw blood but you usually wont encounter large numbers of them.

There are many types of flies. May flys and horse flys bite. House flys do not.

I'm from the south and there is a kind of big 'ol black fly that can bite a chunk at a time!!! OUCH! Thankfully they don't usually come inside, where I like to stay in this horrible heat.

Common house flies have no teeth as such and drink their food rather than chew it. A house fly will vomit on it's meal to soften it to a pulp, then trample the vomit in so that the food can be sucked up. It may however lay its eggs in an open wound! Such lovely creatures!

Yes they can. It is my experience they tend to bite when it's going to rain or very hot. I was bit by a huge fly on the 15th of this month and it is still bothering me.
