Look at this site, most can't even form a coherant thought, and in fact, are lucky if they sound like they are answering the same question as everyone.

I don't think teens have ever been a smart group of people, but the specific problem is caused by three things.

One: the public school system we have in the US. It's beyond a joke, it's too far gone to even be funny. I know people in high school who don't can't list the three Axis countries in WWII, or who are seniors and can't state the pythagorean theorem.

Second: the mass use of entertainment. You can list anything here, from video games to music to movies and sports. Teens get caught up in them and spend all their time with them. Because of this they don't have any time of effort left to devote to education. It's nothing but misplaced prioities.

Third: this is the root cause of the other two, and this is the parents. Parents ultimatly bear the responsibilty of their children. If the school doesn't force your child to learn, send them to another school that does. Make sure they study, and spend time with them from a very young age, helping them with their homework, etc. Also, don't allow them to become so obsessed with media entertainment. Don't plonk them down in front a TV when they're young, and don't give them a bunch of toys to play with. It is up to the parents to train the children from a very young age, and if they neglect theit duty for the easier course of passive entertainment, then they bear the complete resonsibilty later on in life when their children, now teens, can't even put together a coherent sentence.

I'm sure most of them aren't retarded in the purest sense of the term. However, I do agree with your observation about their ability to be coherent. But I'd pose this challenge to all of the parents who participate on this site:
What were you thinking?!?! When did you quit holding any standards up for your children? They are, as a whole, a wreck!
I am ever grateful when I see a intelligent response from a Y!Answers youth. It warms my heart to see that one among many takes the time to prove the others wrong!

I know that the education that I got when I was a teen included a much harder curriculum. You either learned it, or you failed the class.
I know too that we didn't have all the video games that teens have access to now, or all the TV programs that are directed at teens. I honestly believe that THAT has a lot to do with what you are referring to.
However. I know some very intelligent teens that aren't into all that stuff, and are " beyond their years", and very responsible . But I believe that has a lot to do with their parents pushing them to become better, where others don't.

I've kinda noticed that about some teens. notice I say some, cuz not all of them are completely stupid in their actions. they just seem to not think or to not have any common sense.

and actually "retarded" isn't the right thing to call them cuz it doesn't mean the same thing as "foolish" or "making dumb decisions". I know someone who's really retarded and I find that when the word is used incorrectly it's a little insulting.

I've answered enough questions with logic to be considered smart, i'm definately not "retarded". Don't call all teens retards, just the extremely stupid ones who answer questions incredibly wrong and think they're right. And to the person who said something about grammar, I always [always] speak proper english. So not all teens are stupid. Don't judge us all by the ones you see on TV and such.

Yes most of them have no sense. I work in a library and they come in all the time and they act so stupid! And techniquely I am still a teen. I am 19. But I can say I never acted like that and actually mean it. I grew up really quick.

Teens aren't retarded. They are just lost, they need guidance. They are not getting the education they need or they are not focused because there are too much pressure and distraction in the world these days. I think parents need to step up and play an active role in their childs education.

Not all teens are retarded. I'm 13, and I'm not retarded. There are teens that don't act stupid, or slutty, or bitchy or "blonde" or ditzy you know. Stereotypes are taking over the world and some people act like that to fit in or be popluar.

they seem to be incapable of much independant thinking.....

they know all about tree-hugging.....but..can they spell?...as a rule.....not too well....and for the most part it's a failure of our public education system

our 2 adult daughters don't hug trees, but can write a proper sentence & spell quite well...they can even find most countries on the globe without much problem.....they were home-schooled
by my wife....they are also ahead of their puublic school educated peers in social skills..........

Our teens of today don't lack intelligence...they are just poorly educated as the result of a inept public school system....

.....or so it seems to me
