It depends on what you landscape looks like, and how the enemy is positioned.
Running uphill? Bad for a foot battle.
Attacking a castle? Better soften the place up a bit with catapult fire and archery.
But the best way to attack I think, would be to raise your shield up to deflect arrow fire, and move as one group with a battle cry. Get loud enough, and you just might make a few of the enemy soil their armor. By showing no fear and utilizing your shields, you may stand a chance of living into a foot battle. You'll be tired...but there.

The Romans took care of that. They divided their larger units into smaller units with a just a few soldiers in each. If one soldier shrunk away from battle, the law was that the other soldiers in his unit had to kill him. If they hesitated to kill him, they themselves had to be killed. This was not to kill off your own army, but as you can imagine with such discipline you really had no choice but to fight.
For some armies, the charge was the only military tactic. Scottish highlanders (Braveheart) did not know how to fight any other way. They were absolutely useless in a rank or any kind of formation. Their only hope to win was to charge and shock the opponent into running away.

Tactically? Interesting stuff, medieval history.
Read Art of War for good tactical info. I'd guess two prongs of heavily armored soldiers, since it would give the enemy two fronts to worry about, then they'd be broken into two groups, one surrounded. Given infinate resources, space and planning, I'd have archers at the rear firing into the enemy crowd.

The best way to go into a foot battle like that would be behind what was called a shield wall, each soldier interlocks their shield and you have a spear or sword poking through the wall. it was very effective.

I think if you were wearing a Mr Blobby outfit, or Big bird from sesame street, you'd scare the living daylights out of them.
I know I'd run if big bird was charging me with intent.

i think if it was your first battle then you chain mail would be brown with worry!
After you got through that though,. imagine the feeling you would have, to have come so close to death and survive....that would be the biggest rush ever!
I presume after that your addrenaline would be pumping for more bloodshed, and before you know it youll be on a crusade raping and pillaging somewhere!
