Correct me if i'm wrong, but Truckers (whom i have the utmost respect for, by the way--love ya uncle kenny) can only drive 10 hours straight before having to stop for sleep. Why then can Paramedics and EMTs work 24, sometimes as much as 48 hours in a row, oftentimes with no sleep, and no one bats an eye? i know i wouldn't feel comfortable having my husband show up at my doorstep to work on me at the end of one of his marathon shifts if i needed serious help. does no one care, or are they just that understaffed that they have to look the other way? he worked 36 hours straight yesterday, called to tell me he might have to stay for another 12, (but luckily, they found someone to come in and cover the last half of the shift last night) then turned around and went back in for another 24 this morning. had they not found someone, he would have been at work 72 hours. and it was the supervisor that was letting him work, or should i say asking him... shouldn't someone do something?

Well, there's several things. Paramedics are usually housed near the hospital for their 24 hour shifts, not working continuously. Some areas, they may get 1 or 2 calls. And the nature of the business means that they'll have an adrenaline rush, etc. as stimulation. (I cross trained in the army as a medic)
With driving truck, it's MUCH different. It by nature has the Trucker driving among public roads/drivers, and is in a rig that weighs 80,000lbs. The work involves sitting in a chair, with you're hands (hopefully) on the wheel, staring at a stretch of road that may continue straight and level for the next 10 hours......... It's not uncommon for this to become literally hypnotic, and sleep inducing. and, ya might have noticed, (myself excluded of course) some of us drivers are, shall we say well "rounded". They're not in the best of shape; so aren't as physically able to maintain.

Good question. I think the truck drivers are more closely regulated due to excessive accidents in the past caused by drivers who were paid by the mile/load. It was put in place as a reaction to occurrences. In the case of paramedics, and even doctors/nurses/surgeons, obviously we need life savers to be available at all costs, they are typically understaffed but essential, whereas the profits of a shipping company can wait.
I also don't think I've ever heard of a paramedic falling asleep while giving CPR, (imagine coming to consciousness to find a passed out medic on top of you).

There are a lot more truckers on the interstate than paramedics. Which one do you want to be run over by? You are asking apples and oranges...neither one is governed by the same rules or agency that sets the standards for the 2 different jobs you refer to.

excellent question , i would think because most truckers are alone and driving huge heavy trucks , some being full of flam able material . compared to a pare medic who works with someone else and driving a van . but you do have a great point and should be addressed

You got your answer but it is up to you and dh to take care of the schedule.
He HAS to be getting sleep somehow. There is no way he can function like that.
IF you do not get your sleep, you DO day sleep is what I call it. That is dangerous as your eyes are open but you are asleep.
