I've left a similar answer on someone else's question, but here goes:

Seriously, the key to being "goth" is to learn about what the goth subculture includes. Mostly, goth's pop culture.

Learn as much as you can about the music (number one!), gothic and horror authors, popular movies, "famous" people in the scene, whatever you can!

No matter what you wear, you won't be considered "goth" unless you know about the history and pop-culture of goth. Maybe this is because goths are such snobs, and don't want anyone to join them...maybe it's to keep out "tourists". Take your pick.

This is the funny part: You don't even have to like gothic things to be considered goth. You just have to know about gothic things, and hang out with gothic people...people (even other goths) will assume you're goth whether or not you actually are. (After all, why would anyone but a goth care about what song is in the opening credits of "The Hunger"?)

Otherwise, don't buy your clothes at Hot Topic. It's okay for a few things (basics like fishnets, or a t-shirt every once in a while...) but you'll just look like every other mall-goth if you buy your outfit there...here, go to this website: http://www.gothfashion.info/begin.php

Nothing's "gother" than making your own clothes, if you're up to the commitment.. :)

By the way, please read those links I've referenced! They can be very useful for newbies. (They'll at least save you from asking embarassing questions, later, once you've start going to goth clubs, or other goth events.)

I was just addressing your remark to my question about my being cute-I am actually a pretty handsomely cute 45-and had I known you were only a pre-teen I wouldn't have been so forward and I would like to apologize-but ya should know now that even guys my age are flattered when they are complimented and I do have an ego-and that is why I wrote this:
And I am single-and you can always IM me because I am a pretty witty guy and I know a lot of Blond jokes-and quit using the white out on your computer screen! As for your question-you accumulate points numerous ways to reach the level criteria as set by YahQQ Answers and you need to make a specific number of points to advance! Give me a ring I live in Seattle-so I know you can award me best answer for my considerably informative response and now to address the current issue (C I B bright 2!)-I have seen Goth for sometime now and as a musician that has performed considerably (Guitar/harmonica-singer/songwriter play as "TheOneKnightStand") I see genres grab hold of followers and take the to different levels-There are numerous types of music now-a-days and they each have a certain flair of attraction-I have seen some girls go Goth and get into the Satanic cult and wear their darl clothes and wind up wearing Tattoos and piercing themselves-and let me tell you that I feel bad for them because Music changes and if you do some permanent conforming you will find that you are restricted and then stereotyped. I watched punk explode and saw these guys grow-up into slaves to the society because no one wanted to hire them when with their outrageous lQQks they could not contribute positively to their jobs. You also swnd out signals to those that surround you that you are open to the interpretations of that particular brand or BAND of people-and you will find that wanting recognition from any ACt will cost you in sacrifices-and why? Because once you have applied to their cause they are going to want you to requisit conformity. Simply said if you don't fit in YOU're OUT! And then you meet some really swell guy (or girl) that you really fall hard for and they want nothing to do with your morals and values because you have demonstrated a separation from their belief system. What ever you do-remember to have fun-and as long as it is exciting persue it but do not close the doors of opportunity to a world of life and adventure by singling out caos and disorder over intellectual discovery (HAHAHA HOHOHO HEHEHE) I was a wannabe hippie!

Let's get something straight. Who you are, and who you want to be are two different things kid. You aren't punk/goth/rocker/emo/retarded because it's not part of your personality yet.

If you want to look and act like one, just start wearing clothing with no taste. Black shirts and pants with crome studded belts with black lipstick and fingernails seem to do the trick. Next, you need to work on the personality. You have to think like a douchebag to be a douchebag. Just concentrate on thoughts or memories of unfathomable sadness, and don't ever think about anything positive again. You'll look and feel like a dumbass in no time.

Ewwww....if you have to ask us, you shouldn't be doing it. Period. You said "im not sure how to act or dress". That is a direct quote taken from your question. That is degrading to all little girls everywhere. You should ACT LIKE YOURSELF. Dress in what makes you feel good. Mix it up. If you want to be different, go prep one day, a little goth the next. Be unique that way. Don't ever ask someone else how you should "act".

being yourself is always the best instead of taking on stereotypes but either way , goths always wear dark clothing , a black jacket and some black skirts or jeans should do it , if ya wanna go all out you can throw in some black lipstick or eyeliner or mascara. for punk its usually blue jeans that are a bit tight like the emos wear and black hair usually with a bright color on the tips and band t-shirts , like metallica or black sabbath , pantera etc. , punk usually doesnt wear any makeup but when they do they usually have a bright colored lipstick or something on.

Why? Just be yourself.

Punk isn't about shopping at Hot Topic. It's about being an individual. Now go out and support your local bands!

get lots of black stuff, ripped fishnet tights, long leather coats, dont wash yourself - ever, walk with your head hung down so your lank greasy hair swings back and forth across your face, pierce every available piece of fleshy skin and you're pretty much there! Good luck!

Ummm, if you have to change the way you act or dress, why do you want it? Is it to fit it? Seriously, wear what is comfortable for you.

If you don't know how then you're just being a fake. Be yourself it's more appealing!
