It's okay if you go to France, but maybe it's so popular among the French because they won't get kissed unless someone does it to them as they greet! Ha ha!
Then the Dutch outdid the French by making a three-kiss greeting. The French allegedly only kiss twice for a greeting.

In American Culture, space is very important. Anyone crossing into your personal 'bubble' will cause unease. The same applies for shows of affection. It is not considered polite in America for a man to kiss another man's cheek. The immediate mental response is to label the offending male into a narrow field where we understand him, aka, gay.
Women in America, on the other hand, are considered to be much more soft and open then men are. So giving a friend a peck on the cheek or hug is totally acceptable.
These perceived differences are a wonderful example of sociology in it's finest. You act as you parents do, and as your friends do. Men are tough and are not supposed to show that tender affection, while women are supposed to be the caring sex.

It depends on the culture. Here in Italy I use to kiss my friends on the cheek and it is OK. Somebody told me that in some countries of Asia kiss a girl on the cheek in public is considered very bad, almost an harassment.

That's what I want to know. I also want to know why gay guys are criticized and called gay, but when straight guys act 'crazy' with their friends and touch and feel on each other, or even kiss each other, and when football and baseball players spank each other's butts, it's okay...in a way it's even considered an additional sign of masculinity. That's not right. Why?

Depends where you're from.
It's ok in Spain.
So if a gay man kisses a girl cheek to cheek, does that then make him straight? It's all stupid.

it's only americans that are really uptight about that.
