great live music

A band that is actually live is generally a great start (some bands/groups mime live, which is just stupid) but some activity on stage, a great atmosphere created by the band, crowd participation, things like that. The best live act I've seen recently was Marilyn Manson (not even a Manson fan!) but the band's performance made them an awesome live act. So entertainment, perhaps not surprisingly, has to be the best indicator of a great live act.

I think you have to change the guitars and drums beats and riffs slightly from the recording, thats a must, cos people dont like seeing a band live playing songs they've already listened to, I like it when they do a different solo thats even better than the original and things like that,

Secondly, they have to put loads of energy into it cos that lets the crowd know they really enjoying being on stage and playing the music and that gets the crowd caught up and then the crowd enoy it even more.

Also i think they have to do something funny and cool on stage, like Rammstein, a German heavy metal band, they haver things like flamethrowers attached to their guitar, they fire fireworks form their drum kits, set each other on fire, all while they're playing! Apparently its amazing and hilarious to watch because they go psycho and flame each other explode things, set motor bikes on fire etc.
If a good live band can do cool things like that and not only let the audience enjoy seeing the band and hearing the music but entertain the audience aswell then I think they're a truly great live band

Great question. I think that most importantly they have to like playing live. Energy is very important. It helps if they have good musicians comfortable playing solos and improvising their own songs on the spot. Also, the fan base. Some concerts are more of a scene than a musical event. Finally, some shows have gimmicks like Pink Floyd's crazy stage sets or Kiss' costumes.

The ability to sound like their records. I went to see Genesis in the 80s for example, and the music retained its power and the musicianship was just as good. I went to see Pink Floyd, who are truly great on record, but (hate to say this of my heroes) but they were disappointing live. The best live band I've seen recently were Keane.

Consistent talented performances. Too often a live band sounds absolutely nothing like their studio recordings. I believe that is because the studio can take a lack-luster performance and "tweak" it to the point where the band doesn't even sound like a band. Then when those groups get on stage, you can undersatnd why the studio had to "tweak" their performance.

well
someone like Coheed and Cambria,

i dont really like it when bands talk in between song too much, and they rarely do this.

The singer had to be awesome, allowing you to completely understand then, and getting the crowd to sing alone ( i think that is my fav part),

mosh pits are awesome ( not that i enjoy going in them, but i enjoying standing on the outside and pushing people in),

crowd surfing is a must.

The sound system of the arena, place has to be good, nothing sucks more then having a horrible sound system

a guitar solo/ drum solo/ base solo is awesome.

i love live concerts.

Give the crowd what they want. Give all you got to putting on the best show that you can. Don't let anyone leave the building without knowing they got their monies worth. Make the person in the back row enjoy the show as much as the person in the front row. You must find what get the crowd going and play on that with all you got!

Mel said it perfectly. Nobody has any stage presence anymore. I've seen too many bands recently that stand still on stage. Long live the 80's hair metal bands!!!!!

The sound is unimportant. If you put forth all of your energy and just have fun, then people will remember how amazing your live show was. Also, audience communication is key, so they feel like they're a part of the experience, instead of just watching.
