never leave." Many Americans would like to leave, but there is no exit strategy. Is realizing that a situation is hopeless and cutting your losses the same as cutting and running? I think the phrase has outlived its usefulness.

"Rebuilding Iraq will require a sustained commitment from many nations, including our own: we will remain in Iraq as long as necessary, and not a day more." -- President George W. Bush, Feb. 26, 2003

These words were further substantiated by outlining the definition of victory in Iraq in stages:

Short term, Iraq is making steady progress in fighting terrorists, meeting political milestones, building democratic institutions, and standing up security forces.

Medium term, Iraq is in the lead defeating terrorists and providing its own security, with a fully constitutional government in place, and on its way to achieving its economic potential.

Longer term, Iraq is peaceful, united, stable, and secure, well integrated into the international community, and a full partner in the global war on terrorism.

To this time, not even the short term stage has been accomplished and Iraq is in its worst state ever.. no less than civil war is imminent and neither the new government nor the presence of the American troops can prevent it.

Given that, those words from the song Hotel California are like a resounding gong.. the impact is deafening but nothing can be done, just keep singing that song.. Iraq is just programmed to receive, but not to let go.. so Americans can check out anytime they like, but they can never leave!
