The first electric guitar was created in 1931 when Paul Barth and George beauchamp joined forces with Adolph Rickenbacker. Together they created the A22 and A25 cast-aluminium lap steel guitars. They were known as the 'frying pan' due to their shape. They were the first commercially produced electric instruments.

However, the first 'true' electric guitar was the 'Electric Spanish', made in 1932 also by Rickenbacker. It was a basic arch top design fitted with the same 'horseshoe' pickup as the 'frying pan'. The 'Electric Spanish' lead to the development of Gibson's first production guitar, the es-150.

depends of your point of view.
The first accoustic/electric (an accoustic guitar with a mic) guitar was a Gibson made in I think 1934 but not certain. The first real electric guitar was the Fender Stratocaster from 1948.
