Elements are the base components. Is a basket the same as a basketball? Its made up of basket and ball, but when combined they are something different. Elements are like words. Compounds are like compound words.

Copper is an element. Copper sulfate is a substance. Copper cannot be broken down much further; only to subatomic particles. Copper sulfate can be broken down into copper and some other elements that I can't remember at the moment...

Copper sulfate is a mix has stated before. But it contains 3 types of elements :

Copper, Sulfur and Oxygen (see formula CuSO4)

Copper and sulfate are under their ionic form in CuSO4 and not directly bound together.

Copper - it is in solid form. contains only copper. Denote-Cu

Copper Sulphate - chemically altered. (liquid state) electrolyse copper (it means you seperate the ions from the copper thru a gadget), get the ions Cu2+ add with Sulphate ions SO4-

Add dem together, you get CuSo4. Its called a redox reaction.
Redox= Reduction and oxidation (transfer of positive and negative ions)

Its like making baby. Add a lil from ur mum and dad's gene, you get sumtin new. Thats u. You parents and you are two different thing yet you guys are related.

Hope i make it easy for u to understand. =))

Copper is an element (made up of one type of atom).

Copper sulphate is a compound made up of atoms from the elements copper and sulphur bonded together. It contains two different types of atoms, and thus is not an element.

Understand now?

but it's a mix.

it's like asking why is poodle a breed, but a poodle and a bulldog, if bred together, aren't??

sulfur and copper are elements on their own, b/c they are in their pure and basic form. but, if you mix them with something else, then they aren't that basic elemental form anymore!

hope that helped!
