Sometimes because they don;t have all the answers, and they may be frustrated when you ask things they don't know the answers to. Or, they just don't like it when you talk back.

I am a parent. I have always let my children have their opinion. I don't tolerate disrespect. You answered your on question. Challenging your parent's is being disrespectful . Try talking to them and not putting them on the defensive by challenging them. Maybe it's the way you talk that they don't like. If you have an attitude and always think you are right? That will make them upset and they probably won't hear what your trying to say. Unless you are an adult living on your own? Your parent's have the last say. Why not try changing the way you approach them about thing's. I think you will see a positive difference in the way they react. I hope this helps. Good Luck.

Parents are human too. They have their ideals and are trying to raise their children the best they can. When a child goes outside the realm of what parents see as reasonable or right, then the parents have to rethink their own ideas or try to figure out how to best guide the child.
Parents aren't always right, but the good ones are always trying to act in the best interest of the kids. Be patient with them, because one day you may be a parent. You will look back and wonder how your parents got through it.

It's all part of growing up. You need to realize that parents are still growing also. Some parents except the fact that children are supposed to challenge in order to reach maturity and Independence. Keep in mind only intelligent people ask questions.

The bible says children obey your parents for this pleases the Lord. I don't believe children should be disrespectful, but it is my belief that a good parent would be willing to discuss any issue with their child and be interested in what the child has to say. My son and I have a wonderful relationship. He may not always agree with me but we talk about everything. The type of parents you are talking about need to take time to pray themselves and then listen to their children.
Ephesians 6:1
[ Children and Parents ] Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
Colossians 3:20
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

I think one reason is that usually children become a pain in the neck when they try to outsmart parents. Another reason may be that parents are human beings too, and as such imperfect. We don`t have all the answers. What we do have is a bit more experience which may be valuable and can only be obtained by living.

They want their children to be like them, and it hurts when they aren't. If the kids are very different, they may feel like it means they're not very good parents ("How could they be like this? This isn't what I wanted them to be!") And some people just don't like to be challenged. Finally, they may not be able to accept that you're old enough now to have your own opinions--they have experience, and want you to listen to it.

Because they feel that their power is being threatened... at least that's how it was for me. They don't like the fact that their children develop lives away from their control, and it's difficult for them to deal with that. Not only that, but there is a natural tendency to try to make your kids think the way you do, so it's hard to deal with when they don't.
