A real gold ring will have that engraved on the inside. There are various karats with 24 being pure gold. That is much too soft for rings. 10, 12, 14 or 18 are common. It might be gold-plated or gold-filled. Thin platings wear off quickly, but thick ones are durable. There are several colors of gold. Yellow is most common. You may also see rose or white. Cartier makes "Trinity" rings with all 3 colors. Red gold is rare. Green , blue and grey gold are seen in jewelry. The colors and cost depend upon what is added to gold. There are even variations in a general color. In the USA, you see mainly 2N yellow 18kt gold, but in Europe there is 3N. Both have 75% gold but different proportions of silver aand copper. Red gold has only gold and copper. Grey gold has iron. White gold has palladium and silver. Blue gold has mercury. One can test gold with aqua regia, but your friend wouldn't like that.

The only way to be relatively sure is to check the density. You may not have the facilities for this. Gold is around 19 g/cc, so with a graduated beaker (drop the ring in to determine ring volume) and a scale, you could determine the density of the ring. A ring is probably only about 5 grams, so you need a precise scale.

Otherwise, bite it with your teeth gently and see how soft it is. With only 14K this wouldn't be all that easy.

If it is real, and simply gold, it's probably only about $100 so why wouldn't it be gold?

If you can't take the ring off the girl's finger, you just need to acquire an eye for gold. Kind of like how with diamonds, you can almost definately tell whether or not it's real by looking at it. Just practice!! But I can tell you that the higher the karat, the more maleable it is. Also, it shouldn't be very orange or very yellow.

If this ring is indeed gold on the very inside ring part in very tiny letters you will see either 14K or 18K. If there is nothing imprinted on the inside ring that means it is fake. Look for the made in china.

I do not know if you will be able to do this but take the ring off and look for the 14k or better inscribed somewhere on the ring.

There is also a solution that jewelers use, a liquid you can drop on the gold to see if it is real. I don't know how hard it is to pick this stuff up though
