However, now that I have read your additional details, I have a slightly different answer. I am a huge fan of Dr. Phil (I hope you will make an exception to your doctor rule). He has several books that I think will help. Self Matters is a great book about becoming happy about yourself for who you are. In all of his books there are questions to answer and he helps you interpret your answers. so it's kinda like seeing a doctor without actually having to see one.
He also has a weight loss book "The Ultimate Weight Solution", which teaches the healthy way to lose weight. He explains that there is more to losing weight than just watching what you eat, not eating, or getting rid of what you did eat. There are so many other aspects, like having support from friends and family and having realistic expectations. Well anyway, he has 7 keys that make weight loss possible - and they are lifestyle changes, not just a temporary diet.
I started following his advice in January and in one month I lost about 15 pounds.
