Actually Mirena is commonly used for people with a history of thrombosis(blood clots), as it only uses a small amount of progesterone of which very little gets into the blood stream. The culprit for increased risk of DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) is estrogen. This is why women with a history of DVT, smoking, over 35 years of age, obesity, or sedentary lifestyle should not take oral birth control that contain estrogen.

I didn't get a blood clot but I did have dysfunctional uterine bleeding and had it removed only three months after having it put in.
