I have designed a line of clothing. I know most stores use buyers. Can I just set up a meeting with these people and try to get them interested, or do most stores have exclusive deals with people? How can I find out who is the appropriate person for me to talk to?

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have about the clothing industry as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Here are some book titles that are relevant:

OK, you designed a line of clothing. What exactly do you have now -- sketches, demonstration garments, or a manufacturer standing ready to accept orders and ship in bulk? Most store owners would not waste time on discussions with you unless it is the latter. From a retailer's standpoint, if you don't have the ability to mass-produce the prodict, you don't have a product.

Get the name of the buyers and mail them samples of your work. If the samples are good and the buyers like them, they will contact you. If not, follow up with them anyway a few days after you think they have received your samples and bug the heck out of them.

Good Luck!
