I think it's considered smooth jazz. Man, that lady has a voice. Smooth and smoky at the same time. She is great. Love her music.

I don't think it's jazz, record companies and stores just like to widen the concept of what jazz is for marketing purposes. It's not pop either though she had hit singles. I'd say soul but as is the way, older music kind of gets tagged easy listening if a) its original fans are 35+ b) it's audacious enough to have a melody and understandable vocals.

LOL. That has been debate every since she emerged as an artist. I think it's pop, because jazz and soul are pop if you think about it. They affect many other music genres.
Sweetback (the band) is considered Jazz. For those who don't know Sade is the name of the entire group which is comprised of Sade (the singer....I don't know the rest of her name) and Sweetback (the band).

My opinion is that it is soft jazz more than anything else, and this is due to the types of music as well as the singing style.
