You can relax. This is a very common test and not at all difficult or scary. With my last pregnancy, I had to take the 3 hour glucose test because the 1-hour test results required me to. Basically, you go to the lab in the morning after fasting for 12 hours. You have a blood draw than you drink a rather nasty tasting, thick beverage. This should be similar to what you did for your 1 hour glucose test. The only difference is you have to stay around the lab for 3 hours and have several more blood draws. For me, I did have Gestational Diabetes and was transferred to the high risk diabetic clinic because I was also 38. Gestational Diabetes can usually be controlled by being very careful with your diet, testing your blood sugar, and seeing your doctor when he/she wants you to. One danger of Gestational Diabetes is having a larger than normal birth-weight baby so I had to have a non-stress test (hooked to fetal monitor for about an hour) and an ultrasound every Friday for 9 weeks before my baby was born. She had some birth complications, but is perfectly fine now and 9 years old. She only weighed 6 pounds 14 ounces at birth, smaller than my older 3 which I did not have Gestational Diabetes with. Gestational Diabetes usually goes away after the birth, but you do have a higher chance of developing Type 2 (or adult onset) diabetes later in life so I have to watch my diet and try to keep my weight under control, which is very hard.

I never had to take it but the 3 hour glucose test is essentially the same as the one-hour but they take your blood once an hour for three hours. They are testing to see if your blood sugar is elevated three hours after drinking the soda. If so you may have gestational diabetes, which is diabetes that occurs in some women while pregnant. If you have it you will have to go on a special diabetic diet for the rest of your pregnancy.
The risks of gestational diabetes include high blood pressure in mom, excessive weight gain, and high birthweight, among other things. Also women who have gestational diabetes have a greater risk of developing normal diabetes later in life.
Good luck!

It's not much different than the first one, only longer. You will not eat or fast before the test. If I remember correctly they will draw blood first...then have you drink the syrup solution. You will be drinking more than the first time. Then every hour after they will draw blood. This is done to see how your body breaks down the sugar. They are checking for gestational diabetes. A lot of women have the same problem, I did. If it comes out where your body can not handle breaking down the sugar they might try a special diet or you might have to inject insulin. The risk for not maintaining your sugar can differ. You can have a very large baby, my son was 10 lb to the baby having problems after birth with low blood sugar. Just listen and follow your doctors suggestions closely. I hope everything works out. You can im me if you have anymore questions.

I haven't taken the test, but I found this and it should be helpful for you.
You have been scheduled for a three-hour glucose tolerance test because the result of your one-hour glucose screening was above normal. The glucose tolerance test measures your body's ability to use carbohydrates properly and to test whether you have developed diabetes during this pregnancy.
In order to have accurate results, it is important that you follow a carbohydrate-rich diet for three days before the test. Your carbohydrate intake should be at least 250 grams per day. Protein such as meats, fish or cheese, and fats such as butter and bacon, may be used in normal amounts.
When preparing for the three-hour glucose tolerance test, it is important to remember the following: You must eat at least 250 grams of carbohydrates each day for three days.
You should not eat or drink anything except water after 10:30 p.m. on the night before the test. On the day of the test, do not eat, do not smoke, do not engage in strenuous exercise, and do not take medication without consulting your physician.

I had to take it. YUK! You will go in, they will take your blood and give the glucose to drink . You will go back out to the waiting room ( my Dr. told me I had to sit still) and wait for an hour. They will call you back in and take more blood. Then you wait for an hour. They call you back in for more blood and wait another hour. Then they take your blood and tell you that you can go home :-). My Dr. office didn't have any appointments that day but they had to be open for me and 2 other woman taking the test. That made it nice because I crawled up on their couch and went to sleep lol. Good Luck. Oh I did have to fast before I took mine. Nothing after midnight.

The same as the one hour test except they have you fast for 8 hours and draw your blood 3 times.

It is a simple, but conclusive test. They will give you a sugar drink to ingest, and allow that time enough to get into your system, (3-hours) then after taking a sample of your blood before and after, they can analyze how your body reacts to breaking down these sugars or not.
Good luck!

I only had to have the one hour done. For the three hour they give you the same liquid that you had to drink for the one hour and then they will draw blood one, two, and three hours after you drank it. They just want to check your sugar levels to see how long it takes you to get rid of the sugar. They want to make sure that everything is ok with you and the baby.

Don't worry until you take the 3 hour and they call you back to tell you it's bad. I had to take the 3 hour and it was really boring and all but nothing came of it!

It's pretty much like the first but longer, and they take your blood more. Bring something to do! Its gets very boring and long.
My levels turned out to be fine. The reason it was high the first time was because I had eaten Grape Nuts with sugar. No one had told me not to eat sugar, they told me to eat as I normally do. Turns out I wasn't supposed to eat anything the morning of. Good luck!
