Personality and uniqueness, definitely!

I work at a high school and helped a student w/her personal statement. Try to make yours stand out so that the people in power believe that you will be an asset to the school.

Emphasize not only your seriousness about studying and achieving, but also how you are a well-rounded person who will add to the general atmosphere of the school itself (i.e., bring out any really meaningful extracurriculars in which you've participated).

Boring and sophisticated is not the way to go, in my opinion.

Wouldn't it also kind of depend on the particular university to which you are applying??

That really depends on the university. I would lean towards personality and uniqueness if it is something that may be seen as beneficial. Don't tell them you like to burn dead animal skins int he backyard, but do tell them you like doing civil war re-enactments or that you enjoy helping with political campaigns or whatever interest you do that may be seen as spmething positive.

I agree with the others who have answered you. Personality and uniqueness. To me, you have to stand out from a pile of applicants, and it is important to catch the reviewers attention from the first line of your statement, so that's probably the most important line you'll write. Make it count.
