There must be some meaning to the Yahoo Answers. The best way to measure your own success is to gain points and be as well rounded as possible. This helps one's self and gives pertinent information to those who ask questions.

If the designers of Yahoo Answers are behaviorists, the point of points is a reinforcer for behavior that would sustain the structure of their baby.
For us the point of points may be a lot of things that rationally may seem stupid, but given our real natures are powerful enough so that we spend a lot of time doing it.

The illusion of a reward so that you are encouraged to post replies and ask questions. My take is that the FILTERED "best answers" will compile a reasonable body of qualified knowledge that could in effect evolve into a people-based encyclopedia. Yahoo's version of the wikipedia.

When someone gives me the 10 points, I feel good about myself (it really is dumb when I think about it). I like meriting others' approval and feeling smart. The points are a tangible representation of how smart and popular I am.
