No, I don't think I could every get over the idea of how strange and gross it is, but it is a common act in many other cultures, especially third world, or among self-sufficient peoples. This is probably because most placental animals will eat the placenta. It is theorized that it's hormones and protein help with recovery after delivery. This would somewhat explain why certain cultures still do it, b/c often they come from areas where protein is not readily available, and they can't afford to waste such a good source of protein with another being to care for.

No I will never eat the placenta. Thats nasty. I will however, sit and look at it for a little while. A big bag of watery stuff coming out the cootie hole, amazing stuff.

I don't know that I wouldn't do it. I know a woman who put some of it into a smoothie immediately following the birth of her son. The placenta has an enormous amount of iron in it, which is depleted from the mother's body after pregnancy and birth. If the benefits of eating placenta were explained to me and if it were given to me in a smoothie or something else that I wouldn't taste it, I might consider it.

I have VERY crunchy friend who has had her children "lotus birth" style, and yes, she eats part of the placenta. It is supposed to stop bleeding. Since she delivers alone... no other person around... I guess that this is a precaution. She even has a recipe for lasagne that uses placenta.
As for me, would I ever eat it? NO!!!!! It's sooooo gross. I won't eat anything that comes out of my own body.

It is true regarding one of the above replies: cosmetic companies use them to make beauty products, but this is not common knowledge.
I've seen the placenta, I suppose it would be no different to eating a dead animal, but I don't think I'd ever eat it. The placenta served its purpose, nurished my boy, and that's where it ends.

I would never do it but I saw a show on the travel channel where a family fried it and ate it as a tradition to become closer to the new life.
Tastes like chicken!

In some cultures its a part of the birth. I don't think it is something I could do personally.
