Back in N.Y. we had what we called, i'm sure i'm not spelling it right, (cikata's)They apparently shed out of a brown skin, they flew all over in the hot weather, they were colored black/green and chattered loudly. This is not what's in the trees here in N.C.

Cicadas is what everyone is telling me, but the chatter noise is different , its similar , its almost like what ever it is they are chatting back & forth with one another. The cicadas chattered with a low range sound that grew louder and louder til it stopped.

Periodic cicadas come out every 17 years, (or 13, depending on the brood). There are thousands/millions of them in small areas.

However, ANNUAL cicadas come out every year. Much fewer in quantity. They are not colored as the periodic cicadas, more often are black only or black with some green/blue.

Katydids have come out in the past week or two in the mid-Atlantic, they chatter all night. Back and forth as you describe. Cicadas, whether annual or periodic, are generally pretty quiet at night.
