I talk to my daughter, who is 14, all the time. She's a smart, funny, kid, and does pretty well picking friends. She does have her "girl" moments, but it's all good.

I teach 18 and 19 year olds, and they are truly, truly frightening. Not all -- some are wonderful to talk to, intelligent, deep, really thinking about life and know they don't know everything, love to learn. They are a joy to know. But most -- so lazy-brained, so passive, no intellectual curiosity whatsoever. Want everything, including their grades, handed to them on a platter, expect everything made as easy and comfortable for them as possible, would rather blame than take responsibility for themselves, god forbid they have to work hard to learn something or that I try to challenge them to think. (And this is supposed to be COLLEGE.) Oh yeah, and think they're grown ups despite all this. I think maybe because they're used to too much TV, which is so passive.
On the other hand, I really enjoy talking with kids who are between say 10 and 17!

Hey, I resent that. I'm a teenage girl and I have conversations that don't revolve around nonsense. For two examples, my best friend and I recently had a conversation and it was real stuff, serious stuff and last night my mom and I sat outside and had a conversation for about half n hour to an hour, we talked about me going to college and about when my sister and I were younger. We talk about serious stuff, like people, sometimes politics, but that's rare, we've talked about why people do the stuff they do, abortion and the new Ro vs Wade thing coming up(both of us are against abortion by the way). We talk about when she was younger and about her family and about our family in other areas. We talk about how the neighborhood is closed off(no one's around). We talk about a lot of down to earth things.

Yeah...I haven't had any conversations, but I've overhead my friend's daughter and her friends talking...it's very scary. Then again, my friend's other daughter talks very intelligently. There are still some smart ones out there, but I agree, few and far between.
Better not let your daughter see this! ;)

You know, there *is* a common denominator in all those conversations...
And let's just say that when I was a teen, I never felt like opening up to people who I knew thought very little of me.

I think there are many teenagers on Y!. They are smart and witty.
The beauty of the answers/questions is that you don't know the age, race or creed of anybody on here. Yet, we all seem to get along!!

Luckily I dont have any to deal with of my own..=)..however my 2 Nieces are like night n day.."H" is all preppy and like miss society girl & like so into styles &like so not amused, and "B" is laid back, smart, witty, not into being #1 of everything (like to thinkk she favors me=))but I know what you mean, alot of teens lack respect & think way too materialistic..but for the most part I think they are a hoot to behold!Enjoy them as they are for as long as ya can..=)
