because they don't want to believe that a anyone can be different from everyone else. so when even 1 person acts similar to a cetrain type the automatically assume that person is just like that

Actually this one got asked earlier in a much different way. America is addicted to sound bites and talking heads. It saves all the time and trouble of actually thinking. You take a slogan (Liberal, Conservative), and immediately apply it. Then you don't have to think anymore. Done.

Stereotypes are the same way. You look at a color, or race, or religion, and you make an instant decision. BAM!

No more thought needed. You already have them figured out.

it is not only americans, everyone is the same. it is easier for them to just think that people of the same group or nationality have the same characteristics.. may be some americans tend to believe stereotypes more because they really listen to what their media is saying without checking if it is true or not

Most of the strerotypes have some truth to them. Some may not, but people tend to look at the majority not the exceptions. * goes back to eating fried chicken and watermellon* HOLLA
