The obvious answer is yes! As a Smiths fan (after 14 years of badgering my my mum...) I can see the genius in Morrissey.
The Smiths were a perfect mirror of the Mancunian spirit and also the major economic social and cultural depression that Manchester has only just recently shaken off. Their music was capable of being both serious and funny at the same time, moving and deeply personal. Songs like Girlfriend In A Coma was pure comedy, whilst something like There Is A Light That Never Goes Out is both memorable and and also one of their most iconic songs. This wouldn't have been possible without his presence on stage and his moody personality, coupled with the guitar genius of Johnny Marr in writing songs.
Morrissey has also made a difficult transition to a solo artist, one which many people find very difficult to make. He has successfully broken that depressive barrier which held him in the Smiths era, and has created an image which remains true to his Mancunian roots but is both moving and different, highlighted in his latest album Ringleader Of The Tormentors.
One of the things I admire in Morrissey is his willingness to stick out for what he believes in.This includes his advocation for vegetarianism on the album Meat Is Murder, his attack on the BBC in Panic!, and also his constant campaigning for animal rights, with 1 of his early solo videos featuring the famous anti-fur campaign poster, and also his public outbursts at a recent concert. He refuses time and time again to be just another boring singer who conforms to what others want him to be like. Instead he pours passion and feeling into his music, producing touching and genius-like music.
Morrissey has probably influenced most singers now, with bands like Franz Ferdinand citing The Smiths and also Morrissey alone as major influences. The huge following that he also has must also been seen, with increasing amounts of teenage fans, me included!, as well as the long time fans.
So why shouldn't one of our best and famous songwriters/singers be honoured to recognise the mmassive amount he has contributed to music?

short answer NO. He is only famous because of The Smiths, his actual solo work is pretty bland, most of it not catchy and tells stories plenty of people have done before. Paul Weller has actually got a bigger fan base, mainly because of the Jam and then changing his style which attracted an even bigger audience. Weller by far is more exciting to watch and doesn't ***** foot around in interviews, he tells it as it is. Morrissey prances around like a fairy and probably gets off on older ladies that used to love him when he was in The Smiths. How can someone like him headline V, when Weller gets this award and has sold more CD's ?

Yes you guessed it, I am a Weller fan.

The man is a lyrical genius. If Weller got honoured then surely Morrissey deserves to be honoured?

i'm happy Corrie gained what they did, nicely deserved, the only element is i wanted Emerdale would have have been given somewhat extra popularity as a results of fact they have been sturdy this twelve months. Eastenders did no longer need to win something so happy they did no longer. i do no longer watch Hollyoaks so i'm no longer able to remark on that yet honest play to them for triumphing 5 awards. i'm no longer an Adam Woodyatt fan so i do no longer probably care that he gained the Lifetime success Award lol.
