I still don't see the big deal. Guys get drunk and do stupid things, especially guys with a lot of money and time on their hands. We all say stupid things when we are drunk. I do it all of the time.

Probably not as much, and that is simply because Mel Gibson has been known to have been anti-semitic, but he has always claimed that "its against my religion to hate" (same as Muslims claiming that Islam is such a "peaceful religion" -- thank Allah Islam is such a "peaceful religion"(!). Can you imagine if it weren't??!).
Mel Gibson finally showed his true colors, the way he was conitioned by his anti-semitic, Holocaust denying father. So the cat is out of the bag, and Mel Gibson his shown in all his hateful splendor.

Ask Salman Rushdie if insulting muslims creates media coverage. He had a price on his head for years.
Ask Dan Quayle if "p-o-t-a-t-o-e" will ever be forgotten.
Basically, whenever people that are famous or popular make ANY statement that can be considered controversial, it will get media coverage.

Of course not. I think that it was a passive/aggressive rant and a way to deflect blame for his being caught. Kind of like the old "the Devil made me do it". Jews have probably always been a convenient target for him. Here is Christopher Hitchens' take.

If you diss Mohammed you generally get death threats. Radical Christians, Pat Roberton gives you death threats. Same thing either way I guess.

other than getting drunk and saying something stupid what did he do exactly? I wasn't paying attention.
or was the fuss just about the fact that he felt he needed to apologize? I tend not to listen to gossip type news...

Yes. People love it when an actor says something that's not politically correct.
