The "X" rating is actually not an MPAA rating. The highest advisory that the MPAA gives is NC-17. An "X" means that the movie was not submitted to the MPAA to be rated.

The MPAA originally instituting the "X" rating, meaning that no person under the age of seventeen should be admitted to the film. Unlike all of the other ratings, the "X" rating was not trademarked, meaning that film-makers could choose not to submit a film and voluntarily call it X-rated.

The MPAA instituted the NC-17 rating in the early nineties, because the X rating had became associated with pornography. Like the original intent of the X rating, an NC-17 rating may be issued for any reason (violence, nudity, language, drug references, etc.)

Notable films originally issued an X-rating by the MPAA:

Greetings (1968): Robert Deniro's first film role. First film ever to recieve an X rating. Contains extreme political satire.

Midnight Cowboy (1969): only X rated film to ever win the Acadamy Award for Best Picture. Central character of the film is a male prostitute.

A Clockwork Orange (1971): Contains nudity, graphic sex, extreme violence, and drug use. Central characters are violent juvenile criminals.

The Street Fighter (1974): The first film to ever recieve an X-rating for violence and no other reason.

Scarface (1983): Contains extreme violence, drug use, and language.

King of New York (1990): Contains extreme violence.
