I agree with you, jobsdun. I'm American but I think the rugby fellows are WAY hotter! :) Just my humble opinion.

Why don't you try to play a game without the padding and maybe then you won't think it is sissy wearing the padding. I think after being tackled and pounced upon a few times you would be glad to have the sissy padding. Playing soccer and rugby is mainly on your feet. Football is played as a man's sport and they don't just run up and down the field. It is a hard hitting game that requires full body contact not just playing tootsies.

If rugby was so "manly" and "hot", it would make NFL/NCAA/Arena football money. However, it doesn't, so all this criticism coming from the wrong side of the Pond is pointless...when rugby games draw millions of viewers worldwide and your "championship" draws sportscasting crews from around the world, then you can talk...the pads allow players to run faster, hit harder and be much more liberal with their bodies than you 'geniuses' that play the same game in the exact same fashion you played it over 100 years ago. American football evolves, something the rest of y'all don't know anything about, thus, American football is now more violent than rugby ever was, but the players are much safer when doing it. "Work smarter, not harder"...another American motto the rest of y'all can't understand, is the reason why this "younger" brother to rugby is now much more popular than the original...

Rugby is a tough sport but the biggest guys on a rugby team would be the smallest guys on an American football team. And they aren't as physically gifted as these atheletes. Show me one rugby player that's 6'7" 295 pounds and can run a 40 yard dash in under 5 seconds.

if you ever played American football you will know why. We go head to head. When a runner is running we try to hit and run over the player. I have played Rugby and American Football, believe me American Football is harder and the speed of the game is faster. They also hit harder. There is nothing sissy about it. Try it with an American you will understand really fast why.
There is a reason why it generates billions of dollars a year.

You think we are soft?. Play American Football without all the protection against a group of 6'6", 300lbs+ juggernauts and let me know how "soft" were they for you after you get crushed like a walnut underneath a steamroller. Football is far more intense and rough than Rugby, hence why all that padding is necessary.

Watch football, then watch rugby and if you can see that they are played at two totally different speeds Then you should change your name to Ray Charles/Stevie Wonder.
We Americans were not soft when we defeated Britain in the American Revolutionary War. We were not soft when we rescued the British from Hilter's air bombing.

At the turn of the last century, the fatalies (yes, fatalities) associated with college football reached a level that President Theodore Roosevelt (no shrinking violet) told the schools, clean it up and make it safer or I'll have it outlawed.
That's what started the trend toward the body armor you see today.

Seriously, soccer and rugby are two rough sports and they play with no padding. My son who has played soccer all his life, was just asked to be the kicker on his high school football team and he doesn't understand all the padding he has to wear to kick field goals and extra points.

If I were a 180lb quarterback and had a half dozen 300lb line backers coming at me I'd want to wear padding too.
Honestly, I don't know why they wear it. I've never seen a real rugby game either so I can't compare. I don't know why they call it football either.
