It's a lot more.
Businesses must have a motivation to find the most efficient, cheapest way of doing things. This motivation is profit.
When businesses are forced to compete for their customers, the customers benefit.
Socialism would take the profit element out of business. What usually happens then is that the quality of what the business offers to the customer declines, as they have no reason for doing things efficiently.
Also high taxes are bad for business. People rely on businesses for everything from their pay checks to their afternoon slice of cake. Whats bad for business is bad for everybody.
In saying that, businesses need to be regulated so they don't take advantage of the people (eg Enron).

so•cial•ism n.
Any of various theories or systems of social organization in which the means of producing and distributing goods is owned collectively or by a centralized government that often plans and controls the economy. American Heritage Dictionary.
Every Government in the world has some aspects of socialism incorporated into it. Consider such things as Electricity, Mail Service and Roadways in the US.
The average standard of living of everyone goes up, the higher the production rate per individual. More goods means less shortages, lower prices, more availability, etc.
History has shown, that in general most people are driven by a profit motive. I.E. they work harder, when the rewards are higher.
So under a free market society, were hard work is rewarded, more people work harder, producing more goods, so the average standard is higher. The downside being that there will always be those that accumulate way more than they can ever consume, and those that accumulate very little.
History has shown that under socialism, where everyone is treated "equally", less people work harder, because there is not "reward" for hard work. So while theoretically everyone is treated the same, and everyone has the same, the size of the pie is smaller, so the average standard of living is smaller. Another thing to consider is that no matter what the organization, a country, a religion or the local flower club, there will always be those that seek and obtain power within the organisation, and more often than not, they end up using that power for self reward.

The nations that have the highest standards of living in the world for the average person are the socialist democracies of Northern Europe. Highest literacy rates, long life expectancy. Universal health care, guaranteed college educations, good pensions for the elderly. No homelessness. Low crime rates, much personal freedom. USA has more crime than any nation in the world. USA 35th in health care, according to World Health Organization. 51st in literacy. Infant mortality is on a par with Third World nations. Social scientists once went to every nation in the world and conducted a poll. They asked, "Are you happy?" It is a simple question, that can be answered yes or no. The Scandinavian countries were the happiest. Church attendance there is only 5%. Socialism works in the real world better than any other system. Almost all of Africa is capitalist and poor. Central and South America is similar. Capitalist nations get into more wars than non-capitalist nations. That is a statistical fact. Also, Christian nations get into more wars than non-Christian nations.

Are you kidding...just plain economically socialism is a loss. In almost every area except a very broad definition of equality socialism does not make sense. Unfortunately that definition, in the long run, equates all persons to the lowest common denominator, and no one can excel beyond the least productive in society. Beyond that socialistic societies all over Europe have far more unemployment and much less productivity than the capitalistic countries such as Japan, the United States, and South Korea. I'll be the first to admit that basic health care should be considered a human necessity, and it is unfortunate that more people in the United States do not feel this way, but proposing a socialistic economy as an avenue to achieve that is a tremendous mistake.

larry and Ludd_Will_Destroy_You are total losers who twist facts to make themselves fee important
The nations that have the highest standards of living in the world for the average person are the socialist democracies of Northern Europe.
this is due to oil they sell internationally mainly norway
Highest literacy rates, long life expectancy.
this is due to the fact they don’t have ghettos developed from failed socialism from the Johnson years and a group of people forced to live there because of socialism and the gang activities allowed to mutate and grow from failed social programs and a failed liberal justice system run by liberals who are social engineers with their thumbs up their ***
Universal health care, guaranteed college educations, good pensions for the elderly. No homelessness. Low crime rates,
This is paid with oil money from selling it on the international market
These countries don’t have an immigration problem with Mexico
Much personal freedom. USA has more crime than any nation in the world.
( this is big opinion)
This is due to our failed liberal justice system and allowing the government into the education system – which by the way is unconstitutional
USA 35th in health care, according to World Health Organization.
Yes we have people who want to come here from Canada and Germany for surgurys because they have mediocre doctors in their system
51st in literacy. Our public school system didn’t use phonics in teaching little Johnny and it graduated 8 million functional illiterates and the number is growing as I write this
They also have propagated 8 million drug addicts who are being medicated for no relevant reason
Infant mortality is on a par with Third World nations - liar this is your communist opinion
. Social scientists once went to every nation in the world and conducted a poll. They asked, "Are you happy?" It is a simple question that can be answered yes or no. The Scandinavian countries were the happiest.
Really well maybe they have room for larry and his ladyboy side kick Ludd_Will_Destroy_You
Church attendance there is only 5%.
You have just shown your anti – GOD colors commie
Socialism works in the real world better than any other system.
This is an opinion of a liberal spirochete communist
Almost all of Africa is capitalist and poor. Central and South America is similar.
This is an opinion of an uneducated loser who has no idea what he is talking about
Both of those continents had a long bitter love / hate relationship with socialism and they have never recovered from it
Capitalist nations get into more wars than non-capitalist nations.
Africa has had the most wars and that continent and they had anything but capitalism running their governments
That is a statistical fact. Also, Christian nations get into more wars than non-Christian nations

I don't know about you but the phrase "just the higher taxes" scares me. Anyone who thinks that the redistribution of wealth or the removal of one person's property to give to another is a good thing is neither a friend of liberty nor a compassionate person. Larry: I don't want to pay 50% taxes like they do in your wonderful socialist-democracies. I want to keep my money and spend it on what I want to, not a government mandated program to benefit poor decision making.

Too much government control. If the government controlled health care, the quality of health care would go down the drain. When does government do anything efficiently? Never, yet some want them to control everything. Make no sense to me.

It is the lack of freedom that makes it a bad thing. Nobody would argue that a monopoly is a good thing, but that is what socialism is. A socialist government is a monopoly. They control everything, and you have no choice about it. In the private sector, there is competition. If one business screws me, I have many others to choose from. Under socialism, when the governement screws me, there are no other choices.

Much more, its a step away from communism, it was tried here in the US when the Pilgrims first landed at Plymouth rock, ck our history, its failed everywhere and the people living under it have always suffered. It kills free enterprise and any desire to either succeed or strive for a better life. I could go on and on
