Both are equally good pets. I personally think it depends on the person and what they are looking for in a companion. I own both and cherish them all.

If I were not living alone, and working such long hours, I would have _both_; as it is, it wouldn't be fair to a dog, so I only have a cat.

I don't think either is better or worse, it all depends on situation. If the pet is alone for long hours, it's better if it is not a dog; if you need a lot of affection, all the time, it had better be a dog... I used to have a dog, and now I have a cat, and I really cannot say one is better than the other. Cats are quieter (our neighbours, in the block of flats, used to complain to my mom about the dog); in a house with a backyard, that doesn't matter all that much though.

But if you can give them enough attention, I think it's best to get both, as a married couple of my friends have done, and a lot of fun they have, too. My host-parents in the USA used to have two dogs and a cat...

Depends. Are you home a lot? Then dogs need walking (in allm kinds of weather too). Cats can be left alone more. Both can be very affectionate and attentive.

I have 2 cats who I love but grew up with dogs. I work 10-15 hours a day so cats made sense. Now, I would never own a dog!

After having both in my life, I love cats and tolerate dogs. I've found cats to be loving and entertaining with distinct and fairly mature personalities. My cats have been protective of me, where dogs just sit around barking at any little thing that comes by, which is supremely annoying and useless. Dogs are also loving and entertaining, but always seem to be like a toddler who can never get enough attention and always get in your face for it. People say they make better companions, but all I've seen is higher dependancy. If you want an animal capable of entertaining itself when you're away, a cat is definitely the better animal. If you have time and the desire to take care of the animal equivalent of a human baby, a dog could be good. Btw, dogs require much more space than cats and have to be taken outside to potty, so if you live in an apartment and don't have time or desire to walk it like 5x a day it would be cruel to have one.

Cats are better pets, but dogs taste much nicer, so I would say for long term pet it must be the noble cat. If you are thinking short term and are feeling hungry, get a dog, because when you are bored with its dog logs sticking to your carpet and the constant yelping and barking, the dribbling and stinky breath huffing, you can bash the bugger over the head and shove it in neatly sized pieces into the wok.
The Koreans have some great recipes, but some maybe a bit spicy for European tastes.

I own both dogs and cats. Both bring alot of pleasure to my life and I wouldn't want to be without either of them. However one of my cats is half dog (Siamese!). I got her when I was working full time as they were known as the dog lover's cat - they are very affectionate - definitely a people cat, can be trained (yes really - mine retrieves and knows a few basic commands - will come when called - trained by using a click and a biscuit as a reward).

Also dogs and cats? depend very much on your lifestyle - dogs need alot of work, training and commitment (very much like children) - cats are easier but still very good companions - but you can go away for the night/ work full time etc

Depends on the personality you like in a pet. Dogs come when you call them. Cats get back to you later.

Cats are more independent and only like humans when they want to be pet and they seem to only be playful when they are kittens. If you want to not have to worry about the animal, cats are better. Dogs need a lot of attention and exercise.

I love both cats and dogs but i think cats are much easier to take care of. You have to make sure dogs get exercise (cats too but you don't have to walk the cat). You don't have to worry about the cat going outside to go to the bathroom, they have the litter! Also, cats are much quieter (well, sometimes lol).
