Speaking multiple languages enhances someone. If there are those who think that speaking English makes you less than who you are, they are just ignorant. If you speak English (or another foreign language) well, you could get a job as a translator or another type of position that requires multiple languages. This is good for you and your family. I am sorry if people are being hard on you. That isn't fair. But don't give up on your language studies.

Hello,
One thing I can tell you it's that just because you speak English, doesn't make you any less of who ever you are. There's just one important thing, and it's for you not to forget your own language. I know it's possible, either read books in Filipino, have some friends that speak Filipino, or even better speak to your family in Filipino.
I am half Ukrainian, half Russian, but am a Canadian citizen, and have been travailing since I was four years old. All this to say that I speak all these languages, and let me tell you it helps me all the time.
Besides learning, no matter what it is, languages or etc.,doesn't make you less of a person or of who you are. In fact it shows that your not an ignorant person, but a very opened up person, which is a very good thing to be.
I hope I helped you some how, just remember that it can't hurt you if you know one more language.

NO! just because one speaks english doesnt mean they're not a filipino anymore... considering the fact that english is the universal language... everyone has to learn it in order to negotiate.
i dont know why filipinos make such a big deal out of it. they should encourage it since phillipines is a tourist spot... lots of people from other countries go there to spend a wonderful vacation.. or just to enjoy the exotic sceneries philippines has to offer.
anyway.. back to the topic.

its like when dogs "meow" and cats "bark".
they just changed their sound.. but that didnt lessen their being a dog or a cat.. they're still a dog and a cat. its the same thing with speaking english. and to say that a filipino speaking in english has no sense of loyalty to his mothernation is to insult thousands of filipinos working abroad who send money to the philippines.. they speak english in order to survive.
but of course one should not forget that he is a filipino. and will always be one even if he speaks in a different language or changes his citizenship. it's all in the blood. ^_^

Well, I would rather speak english than Tagalog any day of the week. Once u board an airplane out of Manila, guess what? your tagalog isn't worth crap until u run into another filipino overseas. English is the international language that is spoken everywhere in the world. More power to you when u can speak it.

no it does not

I understand several languages ,
Does that make me a mongrel

YOU are who you are, and if you can
communicate with others, in their own language ,
well that's a gift .

But it does not change, who you are at all .
You are your own person.
