No. The movie is based on the heydays of Idlewild Michigan. Back around the 30's, when prohibition was still strong, the black entertainers weren't allowed to hang out in the big clubs in which they played. So they said "screw it" and started the first black community for the entertainers to play in and hang out with their friends and families. And it was a HUGE entertainment community! It's said that even the mobster Al Capone came to Idlewild to relax and party. It looks t be a musical because thats just how they got down in that day, swing dancing was big and I'm sure they added a flavor all their own. Idlewild has a very interesting past, I know, I live there.

From the trailers I have seen about the movie- there is a lot of music and dancing in it -but it is not strictly a musical.
