The first point and click device was small and shaped to resemble a mouse, and got it's nickname rather quickly as the company wanted something which sounded cute and easy to use. "Point and Click Device" diesn't give a warm and fuzzy feeling. The shape really did it, small, rounded with the long tail..... the rest of the companies sort of followed suit.

The mouse got its name because they were about the same size, shape and color of a large mouse and the wire coming out of them looked kind of like a mouse tail.
