Check, but you are allowed to earn a small amount of money each week. As long as you don't work over 16 hours or earn over a certain amount its legal. For single parents its about £15 a week, for single people its only about a fiver a week.
But it must be per week, not per month. And I don't think its supposed to be every week for years.
The bank or P.O. have to make all your account details available to the DSS if you have your money paid in. You have no privacy when you're on benefits. If you're a single parent you're better off working 16 - 20 hours a week.

would recommend a bank account, depending on your age, circumstances. if a student bank account students free overdraft facility, if on government benefit a bank account instant saver (halifax) you can set up standing orders to pay bills, never set up Direct debits, companies with D/D may come in early for payment before money credited to your account would incur bank charges. S/o you control the payment amount and the date. Instant saver gets a higher rate of interest than a current account the option is yours.

You don't say what country you're in. If you're in the UK, the advantage of the Post Office is that there is one in most towns. On the other hand, if there is a building society near you (I like the Nationwide because it's committed to the co-operative, mutual movement) you will have easier access to your money through the LINK system, and if abroad Nationwide charges you no fees or commissions for using foreign cash points.
You are right to be concerned about being asked about the source of other deposits, although small amounts shouldn't concern you: they could come from non-taxable gambling or bingo winnings. Or, quite legitimately, from child support payments.

for small amounts of money t doesn't really matter whether it's a PO a/c or bank a/c. if your money is being payed in by the Social or DWP they can look at your account when they like, but banks incliding Post office banke by law have to alert the authourities if you deposit more than £5000 at one time, this is to alert them to money laundering/drug dealing illegal earnings that sort of thing. All in all I would say a bank account is better, mainly in terms of access to your cash, you can also arrange overdrafts, which can be a life saver.

You shouldn't really need to worry too much about that. The benefits you are receiving are supposed to be adequate for your day to day living expenses and not really intended to be such that there is the need to stash some away. Now i'm not judging you as I obviously dont know the circumstances, but it would be better in the long run if you declared any earnings that the benefit provider is not aware of as if you dont & they find out you'll be glad you did stash it away cos you may be forced to pay it back

If you are in receipt of Income Support or Jobseekers Allowance (Income Based) you have signed an agreement in law to inform the Benefits Agency of any changes to your circumstances, therefore if you are receiving money from other sources that you have not informed them of you are at risk of being prosecuted if this would affect the benefit you now get. If in any doubt, let them know, it may not affect your benefit therefore you will be able to sleep easy. Working in the benefits area, it is surprising how many people slip up on these matters however clever they think they are. If you are honest, you have nothing to fear!

Bank account because that will help credit history.
Ref: other income,
If you don't declare it to DSS it shouldn't arrive in your account.

It is never good to defraud the state, however they will not check your balance of any account.
Having it paid whereever only means they pay it into your account, they will catch you if you are playing with them
