That's what happens when corporate America/capitalism take over. It's more about making money with a catchy hook and beat than it is about putting a message out there. Old School rap was about empowering the people. Sadly it seems that the ol' mighty dollar has changed what rappers put out.

because back then people where less woried about drugs and **** it was like the parents knew they couldnt stop their children but now our parents were those wild kids back then and you could say they know every trick in the book so they can have more control over the youth which means if the rap was hardcore they would file complaints and prevent thier children from buying it

because essentially there's nothing really for kids to rebel against these days. most rap these days is all about women and jewellry and cars and stuff.
back in the 90s, rap was actually about current events and political issues, that kept it real.

You don't need to hang out on the street if you can get into a good nightclub. Many rap listeners are making these guys rich. These guys are becoming businessmen instead of street punks.

Back in the 90s, is when you had real "Hip-Hop Rap." Many artists actually talked about their lifestyles, unlike the many non-realities rappers talk about today. In today's rap songs all you hear is about ice, women, and beefin. I mean what's the big deal? No one wants to hear about your jewelry, your women, and your own beef. If others don't have that ice, or women, Who cares? Talk about real stuff, in which people can really relate to.
Public Enemy said "Fight the Power," *but I think that was earlier than the 90s* and when they wrote that song, it was major problems going on, and they talked about real ish, and unlike today people are so focused on materialistic things, they overlook the issues in the world to talk about, focus on themselves. Rap was all about talking about issues and life.
With tupac he touched on many powerful issues, with girls at a young age having babies with "Brenda's Got A Baby." He even told his mom he appreciated her, with "Dear Mama." That was real stuff.
