To all those ignorant folks who answered "she's dead" or "your thermometer is broken" -- you should recognize a Celsius reading when you see it!!
40 is feverish, not ice cold!! Normal is 37.
I agree, the pepper probably had NOTHING to do with this. She's probably just got a virus.

Ummm...being that I've been a medical assistant for going on 7 yrs. now....I can only assume that your thermometer is incorrect because the one person who answered is right...your daughter would be dead with a temp of 40...my question to you is why did you check her temperature after touching a raw pepper in the first place? Was she possibly showing signs of an allergic reaction to the pepper? Just doesn't make sense!!!

I really don't think there is to much to worry about with you daughter and the raw pepper. If it was a hot pepper give her some bread to chew on because water only make the pepper hotter. Make sure that she washes her hand so she doesn't rub her eyes. If your daughter's temperature is really only forty degrees you may want to take her into the e.r. because something is not right , normal body temp. is 98.6 orally or 99 rectally.

It is highly improbable that she is allergic to the pepper....a small chance but I doubt it....I would look for another cause...A temperature of 40 is not outrageously high and a cool bath would help her to feel more comfortable. Do not use aspirin. If the temperature increases, then see a local physician.
