Do sports drinks actually help you during physical excercise, or are they bad for you?

before you should drink water, during and after you should drink sports drinks such as powerade and gatorade as they have salts in them which help replenish lost sodium(through sweat), water after exercise may dilute the sodium which in the worst case scenario, leads to death.

It really depends on the drink, a lot have sugars in them.. My advice is drink a natural fruit juice. Some adverts say "re-hydrates" 30% quicker than water" but they are the same as say, orange juice. That is about sports drinks in general but there are some which are excellent and these are available from most sports shops.. Try to keep away from the $%£"*ade types except Luco which is good.

They're rubbish if you ask me. Tooth decay is one of the things that gets worse with those sports drinks. Water is still the best.

But perhaps have a 500ml bottle of Lucozade to hand as well for hot days. I have got dehydrated and headachey before, I was drinking water, but half a bottle of Lucozade really gave me a boost, cleared my headache and helped me to perk up.

You don't need much of the stuff, stick with water mostly, unless you need an energy perk up.

They are decent during intense exercise, since they replace things you lose via sweating.

They are not a good thing to drink while you're sitting around the house, because they have quite a lot of sugar. If you're exercising hard, you're burning off the calories. If you're playing world of warcraft, you're not.

Depends if you have a blood sugar imbalance or not. If you do, then water is the best. If you have good nutrition, your electrolytes will balance naturally, even if you drink a lot of water.

trust me i know this very well,
they might help you for the time being
but water is the best thing you need to drink.
if you keep drinking other things like that you need to stop and don't drink them untill you have had time to cool off, drink lots of water and replace them drinks with it.

sports drinks are good for you because they keep you hydrated during exercise. however, there is no substitute for drinking plenty of water.

They taste nasty - excepts that blue one (go figure) I pretend I'm drinking anti-freeze or washer solvent when I down a bottle. Super fun!

When you're dehydrated they're magic. Also, if you're feeling low, have a drink and you will feel better. Even if you have a hangover it makes you feel better.
This is all from my personal experience.
