Queen Elizabeth is a dignified, responsible, serious person who performs her many duties admirably. These duties are too many to specify here, but, perhaps as important as any of them, is the constant and regular consultations she insists upon with her Prime Minister. Having conducted these regularly in private with 10 successive P.M.s, she is in an exceptional and unique position to use her very high intelligence and political acumen to guide these leaders - which she does very effectively. She was the only person strong enough to control dear Margaret Thatcher!! God save our Queen!!!!!! Long may she reign!!!!!

Firstly - the executive in this country is the Crown. That is, HM The Queen and her ministers.
Aside from official functions (meetings with business leaders, public figures and all the rest, including official entertaining for heads of state, ambassadors, the Olympic commitee and all those shenanigans), she is constitutionally obliged to perform certain functions, such as disolving parliament and opening it, meeting with Cabinet Ministers (who are obliged to report to her) and the PM - she is the only person who can ask for his resignation without a vote of no confidence, and aside from the PM is the only person who can ask for a cabinet minister's resignation.
All government functions are performed in her name, and while it is very unlikely she would, she could opt to refuse royal assent (which is unlikely unless the bill would run foul of human rights or some other constitutional concern). She also appoints the PM, even though this is governed by convention - she has to try and appoint a PM who has the confidence of the House (hence the leader of the largest political party) which is tricky in hung parliaments.
She's also a source of policy advice to all the cabinet - mainly in that she's been politically active for the past 50 years, (in some cases before they were born). It can't hurt Blair that he's got someone to get advice from who has worked with about 8 PM's of varying calibre.
The Queen is also Commander in Chief. In the event of a collapse in government and the otherwise unavailability of parliament, the monarch can declare a state of emergency and if neccessary run the country through prerogative powers reverting back to the Crown until the entire mess can be sorted out.
So what does the Queen do? Think of what Arnold does in California. They both do pretty much the same thing, its just one isn't elected and is substantially older, female and never did body building.

As little as possible. Feeds her dogs, rides horses, gambles at the Races, Drinks whiskey, Waves from her balcony, hits people with swords while saying arise Sir ..... goes on Holiday abroad and spends as much taxpayer money as she can whilst calling everyone in the Commonwealth :"My loyal subjects" and getting everyone to sing: "God save the Queen" at every possible moment.
But seriously .... she is the constitutional head of the Commonwealth. Laws only come into effect when they are signed by her. She has the power to appoint and dismiss Governments and she presides over the opening of the UK Parliament. She is also the head of the Church of England although Charlie (and what a right Charlie he is) has said that this should be ignored in favour of recognition of all religions.

Spends other peoples money and take up space. She is not my queen and I am Canadian. I am not subject to her and I have no respect for her. She can stay home next time she thinks of coming this way. And keep all her useless children there too!

Yes, she waves and smiles but not only pays her own way but generates lots of dosh for the economy
She has worked (yes worked) harder and longer than almost anyone else I can think of with a magnificent sense of dedication to us all.
How she puts up with the continuing silly antics of some of her paid relations is another matter
However, we should all try to see both sides of the coin!
It is very easy to see issues in black and white - life's not like that!

She does a great job as Head of State. However her children have been a complete disaster. Lord help us if Charles ever becomes King.Lets be honest, he is hardly renowned for his good judgement or ability to put the country's best interest before his own desires.

Depends on which Queen you are referring to. The Queen of my house works her butt off, that's me. The Queen of England wouldn't have my job. I really can't see her cleaning toilets and moping floors.....:)

Never knock the monarchy, The Queen is our head of state, and the beauty of having her is that, ok her and Her family are idiots, but at least we don't have the blame for electing them!
Take note, Americans!
The American presidential Elections are my argument for retaining our Monarchy at all costs. President Blair eh? Corr Blimey!!!
