That is very unusual. Mine never did that even when I first brought them home and my oldest one is over 10 yrs old.
What are you feeding him? Have you tried frozen brine shrimp or dried Tubifex worms?
How long have you had him? Is he the only fish in the tank?
Clown loaches need company of their own kind, do you have more than one clown loach? Get him a companion. Where is his tank located? It's not in a high traffic area? That can make them skiddish. Are you offering plenty of hiding spaces?
For now I would stick to feeding very small amounts of food like brine shrimp or tubifex or blood worms and then leaving the area until he gets to be more comfortable with you. Hope you work things out with your clown.........good luck.

My loach is also a hider. I buy at walmart Wardley Shrimp Pellet formula. It's $4.50 approximately. Drop them in at night about 5 to 10 depending on the size of your loach. I also have a snail in the tank. Apparently the loach eats the baby snails (He loves it!). The loach is also a nocturnal animal more than a day animal. And love to hide inside things. Overfeeding will pollute the tank. Is this your only fish in the tank or do you have other fish in the tank as well?

My clown loach always plays dead, until i go near the tank then it jumps up, however it is pretty bold. Clown loaches are usually found in small groups, but as they grow bigger they can be territorial. As for the shyness / eating, feed sparingly, whenever i want my fish to eat something new, i starve it for a few days then it will get use to the new food. Once it's acquired a taste then it will be more bold at feeding time

Clown loach are always shy fish. The best thing to feed him is pelleted food so it doesn't foul the water or best is live blood worms or tubifex worms.

Have you tried a time-released feeder block? I know those are supposed to be for when you won't be around, but, since they disolve very slowly, it might be a way for your fish to find and eat it before it polutes the tank.

Just an idea.

Drop the food in the tank and if he does not eat it then remove it, but my advie to you is get him a mate, then he will lose his shyness
