100% Sport!
It's definately a sport. You need good training, you take lessons, you can compete, you have to be in good physical codition, you have to be in good mental condition (for the most part). I've been dancing for about 20 years and trust me it's a sport. Just because we don't start grunting and slapping each other with wet towels doesn't mean it's not a sport. Dancers have sponsers, agents, and talent unfortunately we also tend to have smaller paychecks but, you can't win 'em all I guess.

Dancing is not a sport. I am not saying that it is not difficult or that it does not require a lot of hard work to be really good at it. I work hard at my job, have had special traing and it is a difficult job but it is not a sport.

Dance was created as an artistic way for society to be able to interact with each other. Dance, of course, has evolved over the years even to the point where there are "Dance Contests" but even in this age it is primarily a recreational art form.

Sports such as softball, badmitton, or golf (although they are played for recreation) were always decidedly competitive in nature. Consider that whenever you play these sports you always keep score. Keeping score is indicative of a sport.

Does that mean that playing poker is a sport? No. Because in order to be a sport it does involve some athletic, physical activity which can be improved with practice.

What I don't understand is why this an issue for you? Just because something is not a sport does not detract from the value of dance in all of it's forms. I went to see the "Nutcracker" and was in awe at the athletic, graceful moves those dancers were able to achieve. I certainly could never duplicate it but can appreciate it's beauty.

I'm certain that you, too, appreciate all of the beauty of dance as well.

I have been dancing for 8 years. And I love it soo much! I take tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical ballet, and pointe. I also am on my school's dance team and I help teach ballet and tap to 3 and 4 year olds. So obviously I am obsessed lol! And yes.. I do consider it a sport! Because we work just as hard as anybody else! So ya.. i am right there with you! I also hate people that say dance is just a vertical way of expressing horizontal desires! LOL ok, that is gross and kinda funny i guess. =)

Physical exertion exceeds many sports. The scoring is too subjective , but if they re going to qualify Ice Dance as a sport, then why not floor. Yes it is a sport.

I watch competitive dancing whenever it's on TV, and I can safely say that it looks REALLY, REALLY HARD. It's like an incredibly tough workout multiplied by a trillion. I don't know if I would call it a "sport" because it's way too artistic to be downgraded to just that. It's harder than a sport because they have to work their asses off AND look really great, even though they're probably sweating like a 300-lb man in Phoenix.

Hey! I have an opinion about this too.
A dancer who is well trained in ballet, and who continues serious training, will be in much better physical condition at any given age than a football player at the same age.

I think it is a art as well as a sport. People watch us dancers and think that it is not hard, but it really is. You build a lot of arm (yes arm) and leg as well as body muscles. And it is kind of like football with the differnet plays. Dancers have to learn choreography.

I'm a dancer and I think dance is a sport. It annoys me when people say it's not. I'm going on my 9th yr dancing and when I tell people I dance, they're like that's not a sport. It annoys me. And I'm like well there is compettitive dancing, and they're like so. But yeah I think it's a sport. And I do ballet, jazz, and musical theatre.

I dance my self and I know the hard work that goes into it!!! It's not twirling in circles. It takes commitment and lots of energy. Dancing is definitely a sport and is more difficult than tennis, softball, and soccer which are all considered sports!!!
