I am currently renting a room from my friend in a 1,470 sq. ft. townhome that he recently purchased. I pay him a flat rent that is $200 more than if I had to split the bills. In other words, I dont pay any bills, I just pay a higher rent so I dont have to deal with it.

Here is my problem....I wake up sweating every night...checked the thermostat today..and he has the central air set at 78 overnight!!! He keeps it at around 75 during the day which I also think is too high. When I lived at home with my parents, we kept it 72-74 upstairs in the central air and in my room in the downstairs I had a room air conditioner that I put at 68-70 while i slept.

My question is how much more would it cost him per month to put the thermostat down to 72 overnight??

I cant handle it anymore....

Too add something here....I am in South Jersey right now where we have been approaching 100 degrees the past few days....

Also..I love the idea of messing with the air flow distribution...I am going to try it as soon as I get home...

The electric company can probably give you a formula for estimating this cost. However, consider this devious ploy. Find where the forced air ducts exit the blower part of the furnace. Here you will likely find in-line vents that can be adjusted such that they will change the proportion of air flow reaching each room. By reducing the air flow to some rooms (including HIS bedroom) and increasing air flow to yours, you will get proportionally more cooling. It also may cause your roommie to lower the thermostat since he will get less cool air and therefore be warmer. Try it. Good luck

78 is to hot- but we would need to know where you live and what the temps are to answer your question more accurately- Normal is 72 and thats where it should be set day or night. Its not just heat its humidity- You rented an Air Conditioned place to live- he is in violation of the Implied contract of what he rented to you, no different that turning it off completely.

You might consider offering a few more dollars during the hottest months- as it does cost more.

I'm not sure... not too much more... we keep ours at 74 all the time... and it's not bad at all. We pay like $60 a month for electricity (which is AC, water heater, power, stove, fridge)... I say "who cares" to you... make it cooler if you want. You live there too if you are paying. And you are paying extra for the utilities, it's your choice too.
