Dictionary.com defines restitution as:

-The act of restoring to the rightful owner something that has been taken away, lost, or surrendered. (See Synonyms at reparation. )

-The act of making good or compensating for loss, damage, or injury; indemnification.

-A return to or restoration of a previous state or position.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Restitution is not really a Christian principle, because it implies that people have an absolute right to ownership. The bible teaches that everything belongs to God, but is in the possession of people. Possessions come and go, and they are of little importance in the "big picture." In fact, there was more than one incidence when Jesus told specific people to go sell everything they own and give it to the poor.

The bible does, however, talk about keeping peace with your neighbors and making concessions for that purpose. It says that if you are sued, you should try to settle out of court and give more than was demanded. This, of course, wouldn't apply to frivolous law suits filed for the purpose of making money.

Basically, people are not entitled to restitution, but if it is demanded, we should give it to keep peace.

Dear Boo,

Are you asking about how a Christian feels about the legal idea of restitution, or about some concept of restitution which is implied or explicit in the Bible or Christian theology?

Thanks!
