you don't really. you can check with the better business bureau (bbb.com) to see if its registered there along with if anyone has filed a claim. however if its a small enough business - it might not be there even if it is legit.

You can lookup the owners of websites by going to www.networksolutions.com and do a who is search. This will give you the webistes registered owner and contact information. You can also do a search for other users post concerning a certain site on the web. Simply type in the websites name in your favorite search engine and include opinions.
Hope this helps

You will all like this one if you are using ie(not recommended) or Firefox. Go to McAfee securitys website and download site advisor. It gives you a small green button thats green for good, grey for untested and red for dont even think about it!!!
When you do a google search(ooops sorry didn't mean to say that!!!)you get green ticks for safe search results and a report on the sites for the truly paranoid.

if you want it for online shopping in the UK, check the legitimacy of a company in www.companieshouse.gov.uk
normally, if a company is bankrupt or dissolved it would be indicated in their files.
all legitimate companies are required to register to companies house.
