If you want perennials, Johnny Jump-Ups are cute (they're little violas), or perhaps a crimson pixie lily, since they do well in planters. The JJU's will spread, so you can get a small planter or a big one, depending on how many plants you want. You may also want to try some succulents---hens and chicks, etc.---that do well in sun, depending on how sunny your little deck is. They spread well, so you can really use any size planter for those.

I have a small deck also and I grew tomato plants 6 feet high in a approx 20 x20 pot, makesure the pot has holes in the bottom, and use very light soil, the best tasting tomatos are heirloom tomatoes...Good luck!

the box is cool but i would go for a container garden! more flexibilty and you can get more creativie!
use old larger bowls paint them and fill them with dirt! and plant!
depending on your shade and sun and what side of the house the deck is on! east north west south!!! will detrermine what plants to get! and your area! good luck!

I have done lettuce and herbs in window boxes. I have done tomatoes and peppers in large pots. Strawberrys can pot too, but keep them well watered.
If you do the peppers and tomatoes I would include 1-3 TBL of epson salt in with the soil. They love it.

I would go for one large planter and put a patio tomato plant in it and under plant with some moss rose for a lot of color.

Herbs such as garlic, dill, parsely, basil and oregano do well in containers.
Some veggies such as short carrots, cabbage, lettuce, spinach, and onions will do well too.
Some climbing or bushy plants like tomatoes, cucmbers, zucchini, peas and beans grow beautifully in containers.
Here's a site on container gardening for more info:
